Twist Events has been in the wedding game for a while. And while we’ve been lucky enough to see some stunning events, some of them could’ve been a tad more sustainable.

If you’re an eco-warrior at heart or just want to give Mother Earth a little love, here are a few unexpected ways to keep your wedding more sustainable:

1. Try plantable favours

Give your guests the gift that keeps on growing. Try handing out cute biodegradable pots with seeds that bloom into flowers, herbs, (even trees!).

Your friends and family will have a living, breathing reminder of your special day.

2. Go with eco-friendly confetti

Confetti made from leaves? Yes, it’s real, we’ve seen it. The process involves punching shapes out of leaves for a beautiful, yet biodegradable touch to your special day. Talk about two birds, one stone.

And if leaves aren’t your thing, you can also try flower petals. Equally charming and eco-friendly.

3. Select seasonal and local flowers

When picking your wedding blooms, go for seasonal and locally grown beauties. They don’t just look fresher, they also travel less. And you know what that means: a smaller carbon footprint.

Plus, buying local is a great way to support your community – and it feels good too.

4. Say no to buying, yes to hiring

Many companies try to sell you brand new items you won’t use after your wedding day. So instead of buying items you’ll only use once, consider hiring instead.

Renting items like decor, tableware, and even attire ensures that these items are reused and appreciated beyond just your special day. While these items get a second (or third, or fourth) life, you also save some money. Win-win.

5. No more single-use plastics and fireworks

Avoid balloons, inflatables, and other single-use plastics, as they contribute significantly to environmental pollution. And skip fireworks and Chinese lanterns. They don’t make a great impact either.

To create a similar “wow” effect, make use of your venue’s space. If you have a body of water around it, opt for a biodegradable water lantern. Just as magical, just as kind to the environment.

6. Pick sustainable suppliers

(Like us!) But truly: When working with suppliers, keep an eye out for who preaches and, most importantly, practises sustainability.

You can take a peek at the Sustainable Wedding Alliance website to see all sorts of sustainable brands – from venues and florists to food, drink, even cake makers.
